Part of women’s health is ensuring your all-around health as you get older. The typical image that comes to mind when most people think of an older women is one that is frail and forgetful. Nobody likes to dwell on that fact that we are all growing older, but when we do, our thoughts ultimately move to the inevitable loss of memory and inability to care for ourselves. These thoughts can be frightening.

However, there are ways to keep your mind active and fit well into your eighties and hopefully beyond. Studies have shown that the quote “use it or lose it” can be applied to the brain. The more we stimulate and challenge our minds, the better the chance we have of staying mentally fit as we get older. When a brain is active, it will produce new connections between nerve cells, allowing cells to communicate with one another. This will ultimately help the brain store and retrieve information more easily, not only for older people but for any age.

Just as physical activity will keep your body strong, mental activity will keep your mind strong, especially if you constantly expose your mind to new and challenging activities. Here are some women’s health activities to keep your mind challenged and sharp.

  • Learn to play a musical instrument
  • Play word games, such as crossword puzzles or Scrabble
  • Start a new hobby, such as painting, biking, gardening or bird-watching
  • Stay up-to-date with worldly news
  • Read, especially sources with useful information
  • Interact with other people on a regular basis
  • Volunteer
  • Work a mentally stimulating job or take classes
  • Learn a foreign language
  • Experience a new culture

It is important to take the above suggestions into account to maximize the capabilities of your mind.Likewise, it is beneficial to your mind for you to maintain your body by eating healthy foods, getting a sufficient amount of sleep, and exercising on a regular basis.  Consider this fact: a woman who is 65 today can expect to live another 19 years on average, making her 84 years old. By taking care of your mind now, you will help keep it healthy for years to come.
