When people hear the term organic food, they think of healthy foods. To produce organic foods, there are a set of established practices known as “organic farming.” Let’s explore organic farming through organic production practices and systems.
Organic farming includes the following agricultural practices:
• The utilization of green manures, cover crops and animal manures to fertilize soils, maximum biological activity and maintenance of long-term soil health.
• To manage insects, diseases and weeds, biological control, crop rotations and various techniques are used.
• Agricultural system biodiversity and the surrounding environment are preferred.
• Alternative health care for animals.
• Use of rotational grazing for livestock operations.
• External and off-farm inputs are reduced. Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other materials like antibiotics and hormones aren’t used.
• Organic farming focuses on soil and water conversation, renewable resources, and agricultural management that maintain ecological balance.
According to the National Sustainable Agricultural Information Service, organic principles are defined as a set of certified organic farming practices. These farming practices include biodiversity, integrity, integration, natural plant nutrition and natural pest management. Most organic farming techniques revolve around these practices.
According to the USDA, Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Services (CREES), organic production goes beyond the avoidance of synthetic chemicals or the use of natural substances over synthetic chemicals. Rather, organic farmers utilize techniques of agricultural practices from thousands of years ago. These age old techniques include crop rotations, green manure crops, composted animal manures; these techniques are carried out in economically sustainable ways. Organic farming emphasizes for overall system health with a primary concern for interaction of management practices. Organic farmers implement various strategies to replenish soil fertility and develop and maintain biological diversity.
When thinking of organic foods, imagine the organic farming that goes into such produce. Organic farming is an organized effort to produce high quality natural foods. The more you educate yourself on agricultural food practices, the more aware you will be in how to access healthy foods.
