Cholesterol is a fat, waxy substance in the human body. Cholesterol is found in each cell of the body. Our bodies need cholesterol to normally function.
Our blood carries cholesterol in particles called lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are made of protein on the outside and cholesterol on the inside. Two types of lipoproteins include LDL and HDL.
-Low-density lipoproteins (LDL): the lipoprotein that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream. LDL, also known as “bad cholesterol” can build up in the arteries and pave way to heart disease.
-High-density lipoproteins (HDL): the lipoproteins that transport cholesterol back to the liver and take it out of the body.
Causes of High Cholesterol
Too much of HDL and LDL or LDL alone are risks for heart disease and atherosclerosis, which is a hardening of the arteries. |
